Many people believe that FIFA has acted inconsistently, or has double standards, by banning the Russian team from international tournaments but not punishing Israel after the war in Gaza.
World football governing body FIFA said it would launch an investigation to consider a possible football ban after receiving a complaint from the Palestinian Football Association about Israeli violence in the Gaza Strip.
The decision to investigate was made after a meeting of the FIFA Council in Zurich on October 3. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the organization remained "deeply shocked" by the violence in the region and called for peace.
"The FIFA Council has carried out the necessary due diligence on this very sensitive issue and, based on a thorough assessment, we will make a decision based on the recommendations of independent experts," Infantino said.
The Palestine Football Association (PFA) complained based on what it said were human rights violations, violations of the rights of member associations and “serious breaches of FIFA’s statutory objectives”. They also noted that 92 Palestinian (non-professional) players had been killed in the war and that the PFA’s football infrastructure had been destroyed.
The PFA also accused Israeli clubs of playing in illegal Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. At least five football clubs based in Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank are members of the Israel Football Association (IFA). This is illegal under international law, but the IFA has denied the accusation.
At the FIFA General Assembly meeting held in Bangkok (Thailand) last May, PFA President Jibril Rajoub also asked FIFA to suspend Israel's membership and ban its football teams from participating in FIFA events.
Many opinions say that FIFA has acted inconsistently, or has double standards, when banning the Russian team from participating in international tournaments, after the country launched a military campaign in Ukraine in 2022.
A similar situation has occurred in the Olympic movement. In May, IOC Vice President John Coates said that Israel could not be punished as it was against Russia, due to “the differences between the two conflicts”.
