According to information from the Center for Disease Control of Dong Nai province, the first death due to dengue fever has occurred in Vinh Cuu district.
Previously, on April 5, patient NNH (15 years old, residing in Ward 6, Vinh An Town, Vinh Cuu District) had a high fever and was given medicine by his family and treated at home. On April 8, his family took him to the hospital for examination and was hospitalized for monitoring with a clinical diagnosis of dengue fever at Children's Hospital 1 (Ho Chi Minh City). On April 10, the patient became unconscious and was put on dialysis and given special care. However, on April 15, the patient died with a diagnosis of severe dengue shock, multiple organ damage, and gastrointestinal bleeding.
Immediately after recording the death, Vinh Cuu District Medical Center conducted an epidemiological investigation, the environment outside and inside the patient's house. The results showed that there was a case of dengue fever near the patient's house about 2 weeks ago. Around the patient's living area, there were many water containers with mosquito larvae such as steam fans, flower vases, and stagnant water in the cracks of iron doors.
The authorities determined that this was a case of dengue fever, with rapid progression, shock, and multiple organ damage. Although the number of dengue fever cases in Vinh Cuu district has not shown signs of increasing, Dong Nai is currently in the hot and sunny season, so people are still complacent, and there are many water containers in the house that have not been rinsed, creating a favorable environment for larvae and mosquitoes to develop.
In the face of the above situation, the Provincial Center for Disease Control requested the Vinh Cuu District Medical Center and Vinh An Town Medical Station to proactively monitor the dengue fever situation in the locality. If more cases of fever appear, the area for treatment should be expanded to ensure that the disease does not spread to other localities. At the same time, strengthen communication about dengue fever and prevention and control measures, especially direct communication, instruct people on measures to kill mosquito larvae, handle water containers, and not miss water containers with mosquito larvae; prepare enough chemicals, sprayers, and anti-epidemic materials to be ready to respond when the disease breaks out.
