Teaching and learning experimental local education materials grade 3: What do students and teachers say?

Experimental teaching of local educational materials for grade 3 in some schools shows that these are truly meaningful lessons, helping students better understand local culture and history.

Third grade students are excited about the experimental lesson on local educational materials in Hai Duong province.


The Department of Education and Training has just organized a practical teaching of local educational materials (GDDP) for grade 3. Teachers are enthusiastic in teaching and students are very excited to participate.

To complete the 3rd grade GDDP document to submit to the Provincial People's Committee for review and approval, and report to the Ministry of Education and Training for approval, from March 17 to 30, the Department of Education and Training directed the organization of experimental teaching at a number of primary schools in the province.

Teacher Vu Thi Thu Trang, Thach Khoi Primary School (Hai Duong City) was chosen to teach topic 3 about Mao Dien Temple of Literature relic site. She prepared an elaborate lesson plan, from learning about the historical information of the relic site to collecting images, videos, historical figures... This activity was taught in 2 periods, each period about 20 minutes. At the beginning of the class, Ms. Trang let the students participate in the warm-up part, looking at images, learning about information about the relic site. In the practice part, the students were instructed to write a short paragraph of about 3-5 sentences to introduce the relic site, then develop a plan to contribute to preserving and protecting the relic site. Finally, applying, from the collected images, students were divided into groups to write information, paste images, and color on a piece of paper introducing the relic site.

Cao Nha Uyen, a 3A student at Thach Khoi Primary School, said: "We really like this subject because we get to learn about the province's relics and scenic spots."
Tan Truong I Primary School (Cam Giang) was chosen to teach topic 6 about the socio-political organizations of my hometown. Teacher Pham Thi Thu Hao, Tan Truong I Primary School said: "This is the most difficult topic of the 3rd grade GDDP document. For students of their age, understanding socio-political organizations is difficult. However, we have carefully researched the teaching method to make it easiest for students to understand."

To learn this topic, Nguyen Hai Dang, class 3C, Tan Truong I Primary School, collected photos of young people cleaning up the martyrs' cemetery in the commune. In the practical part, he wrote a short paragraph about the activities supporting the prevention of the Covid-19 epidemic of the Women's Union of the village. "We are very interested in this subject because we get to experience more than other subjects. Through this subject, we learn about the role and significance of political and social organizations in our hometown," Dang said.

Continue to improve

After each experimental teaching session, the Department of Education and Training organizes a discussion at the school to comment, evaluate, draw lessons and summarize opinions to perfect the documents. The representative of the Department of Education and Training emphasized that teachers need to apply flexibly, innovate and be creative, the documents are only guidelines so it is not necessary to follow the instructions rigidly. Increase student interaction, especially train them in natural presentation skills, minimize memorization and stereotypes.

Many teachers said that the document is eye-catching, the structure and content are suitable for students' ages. Mr. Tran Tho Xuong, representative of the Vietnam Education Publishing House, said that the new document is in manuscript form but has basically met the criteria. The new point of this document is its topicality. However, Mr. Xuong also said that some images in the document are not sharp. The editorial board should coordinate with artists and photographers to have better quality and more carefully selected images.

Some other education experts believe that each lesson should last about 20 minutes, but teachers can flexibly reduce the time. According to a representative of the Department of Education and Training of Cam Giang district, abstract and difficult-to-understand sentences in the document should be reduced.

Some other opinions said that with topic 6 about the Provincial Fatherland Front Committee, teachers can organize for students to go on field trips and experience learning at the commune headquarters. In addition, some teachers said that there should be an introduction to the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers because this is the organization closest to the students.

According to the assessment of many experimental teachers, integrating the content of GDDP into the subject and basic experiential activities is convenient, easy, reasonable, making the teaching period more lively. Through this, students understand more clearly about the culture, history, and traditions of the locality, and love their homeland more. At the same time, it helps them gradually develop their own qualities and abilities in the right direction of the goals of the 2018 General Education Program.

Hai Duong province's local education documents for grade 3 began to be compiled in December 2021. The 48-page document has 6 topics: scenic spots of my hometown, specialties of my hometown, Mao Dien Temple of Literature relic site, famous people of ancient Hai Duong, traditional dishes of my hometown, and socio-political organizations of my hometown.
