Just because his wife dreamed of having a rose garden like her friend, a man in China turned his rooftop into a garden full of flowers.
Ten years ago, Mr. Sai's wife in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, first saw the large, brilliant Eden roses at her best friend's house. She was so fascinated that she immediately bought two of these seedlings to plant.
"My wife always says she's jealous of her friend because he has a rose garden," said Mr. Sai, now 54 years old.
He said he would plant roses for his wife to enjoy and started renovating the terrace. He bought imitation wood tiles for the floor, installed a fence, a wire mesh, and divided it into high and low levels to create depth.
"I have laid about 8,000 pieces of plastic wood flooring on the terrace floor, thanks to which after the rain, the garden will be free of mud and cleaner," he said.
The husband shared that when he first started, he couldn’t even tell the difference between climbing roses and bush roses, so some plants grew slowly, had poor flowers, and even died from pests. Later, he gradually became more confident in his knowledge of flower care.
"She likes to look at things, and I like to plant them. Every time she nods, the whole family chooses new varieties," he said. So far, the garden has 220 varieties on an area of 55 square meters.
The garden is mainly planted in pots to increase the roof's load-bearing capacity, making it easy to move and adjust the layout. For Mr. Sai, planting flowers is like having a "mental illness". Many times when he is about to go to bed, he suddenly has the idea of placing the flower pots, immediately gets up, rearranges them into the most beautiful picture possible, and then goes to sleep peacefully.
He did all the work by himself, from pruning, fertilizing, and watering. He had to take care of his business and take care of the flowers at home, so he was very busy, but he was happy.
Before the rooftop became a flower garden, this was Sai’s parents’ vegetable garden. The rose garden gradually took over the vegetables, and Sai’s mother was gradually convinced, enjoying the feeling of drinking tea and admiring the flowers in the open space.
Because my wife likes bright flowers, I planted purple Rainy Blue, pink Eden, white Bolero, and light orange Sweet Dream climbing rose. My mother likes bright colors, so I added Red Eden or orange Crown Princess Margareta.
During the pandemic, the family's clothing business suffered losses. The couple chose to relieve work pressure by growing flowers. Occasionally, he shared videos of him cutting flowers for his wife online. Unexpectedly, these videos attracted the attention of tens of thousands of people.
This unexpectedly turned out to be good for the family business. Mr. Sai also always took the opportunity to upload videos to share his flower care experiences with everyone.
"Growing flowers is like being human, rushing will lead to mistakes and waste, so you have to be patient in the beginning," he shared.
So that his wife could enjoy flowers all year round, the husband also planted flowers that bloom in winter and fall such as chrysanthemums, clematis, aster, and lilies.
He said life does not necessarily have to be rich and luxurious, but he hopes that by growing flowers, he can find a peaceful and romantic world for himself and his wife.
"Life is like that, you reap what you sow. You don't need to be rich but you need to have a lot of love for your wife and family," the husband shared.
