Car crashes into pedestrians in China, at least 35 people dead

Chinese police say 35 people have been killed and 43 injured after a car plowed into pedestrians outside a sports centre in Guangdong province.

"A serious and brutal attack occurred at the Zhuhai Sports Center on the evening of November 11. The suspect drove a car into people exercising, killing 35 victims and injuring 43 others," local police announced on November 12.

Police said the driver, a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, fled the scene after the crash. Police later found the suspect attempting to commit suicide with a knife in his car. "Officers stopped the suspect and took him to hospital for treatment," the statement said. "We have not been able to question him yet because he is in a coma after self-inflicted injuries to his neck and other parts of his body."
