Corvette ZR1 is equipped with a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, 1,064 horsepower, weighing under 1,700 kg.
Chevrolet introduced the new Corvette ZR1 using a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 1,064 horsepower and 1,121 Nm of torque, with only rear-wheel drive as an option. This power level is greater than supercars currently on the market such as the Ferrari 296 GTB, Lamborghini Revuelto, McLaren 750S, Pagani Huayra and Mercedes-AMG One.
The design is in the style of high-performance sports cars, with air intakes and air diffusers arranged throughout the body, increasing aerodynamics. In addition, the car is equipped with many carbon fiber details, helping to reduce weight. The coupe version weighs 1,665 kg, the convertible version weighs 1,705 kg, which is equivalent to C/D-size sedans.
Chevrolet claims this is the most powerful V8 ever produced in the United States by an automaker. The engine, dubbed the LT7, shares many similarities with the LT6 in the Corvette Z06, but has been significantly upgraded to handle the new turbochargers and boost performance.
Specifically, the engine has a larger combustion chamber, a secondary fuel injection system, new cylinder heads, valve opening and closing are optimized for forced induction, and can minimize "turbo lag", the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission has been completely revised to handle the large torque.
Chevrolet says the car is not electronically limited, giving it a top speed of over 211 mph, but this is an unofficial figure and could be higher. On the Nürburgring (Germany), four test drivers reached a speed of 200 mph. On the drag strip, the ZR1 covered a distance of 402 m in less than 9.7 seconds, reaching a speed of 150 mph. The carbon-ceramic brakes allowed the test to accelerate-decelerate from 129-200-80 mph in just 24.5 seconds, 22% faster than the C7 Corvette ZR1 and 53% faster than the C6 Corvette ZR1.
The Corvette ZR1 goes into production next year in Kentucky. Pricing information is not yet available, but the company says the ZR1 will be positioned above the Z06, which starts at $110,100.
