Does a bigger "dot" engine mean a more powerful car?

According to VTC News September 17, 2023 20:00

According to industry experts, an engine with a larger number of dots is not necessarily more powerful than an engine with a smaller number of dots.

What is the car engine number?

The engine displacement is the volume or cylinder capacity of the engine, usually measured in Liters (L) or Cubic Centimeters (cc). For a single-cylinder engine, the engine displacement is also the cylinder capacity. For a multi-cylinder engine, the engine displacement is the sum of the cylinder capacities.

The engine dot number is the volume or cylinder capacity of the engine.

For example, a car with a 5 cylinder engine and a displacement of about half a liter each has a displacement of about 2.5L.

In addition, people often denote it as I5, V8, W12. These symbols are the arrangement of cylinders in the engine in a straight line of I, V or W. The number after is the number of cylinders in the engine.

(Note: 1 liter = 1 dm3 = 1000 cm3 = 1000 cc = 1000 cubic centimeters).

Does the engine number decide everything?

According to experts, the larger the number of dots, the larger the engine and the more fuel it needs. However, an engine with a larger number of dots is not necessarily more powerful than an engine with a smaller number of dots. Because the power of a car engine also depends on many other factors such as turbo (turbocharger), natural aspiration, direct fuel injection, intelligent cam control system...

With internal combustion engines, the development of technology has increasingly reduced the role of engine capacity parameters and is no longer a major factor determining the power of the vehicle.

The application of a series of new technologies allows small-capacity engines to produce large power, the most notable of which is turbocharging. A modern turbocharged engine can produce 1.5 times more power than a conventional engine of the same capacity. In other words, the power that a turbocharged engine produces can be equivalent to the power of an engine with a larger capacity by 50%.

A typical example is Ford's EcoBoost engine with 3 1.0 liter capacity engines but produces up to 125 horsepower, larger than the Toyota Vios 1.5 liter engine, producing 107 horsepower.

Thus, the number of dots only reflects the volume of the engine, while in terms of power, many other factors must be considered.
