Proactively prevent the risk of dengue fever outbreaks

On May 22, the Hanoi Center for Disease Control said that the number of dengue fever cases continued to increase in the area.

During the past week (from May 12 to 19), Hanoi recorded 20 cases of dengue fever (an increase of 4 cases compared to the previous week), bringing the number of dengue fever cases since the beginning of the year to 268 cases, an increase of nearly 7 times compared to the same period last year. Patients were distributed in 28/30 districts, towns and cities; 147/579 communes, wards and towns.

Current weather conditions are favorable for disease-carrying mosquitoes to breed and develop. The Hanoi Center for Disease Control forecasts the risk of dengue fever outbreaks appearing soon, especially in old outbreak areas, communes and wards with complicated annual epidemic developments.

This week, the health sector continues to strengthen dengue fever prevention and control activities, focusing on monitoring old outbreaks in the districts of Bac Tu Liem, Phu Xuyen, Chuong My, and Thach That. In addition to the drastic participation of all levels, sectors, and local authorities, people need to raise awareness, consciousness, and strictly implement regulations on dengue fever prevention and control.

In 2022, the city recorded 19,779 cases of dengue fever. Dengue fever tends to increase from week 30; exceeds the epidemic warning threshold in week 35 and peaks in week 44; remains high and decreases rapidly from week 49.

Patients were recorded in 30/30 districts, towns and cities; the number of cases in suburban areas accounted for 53.1%, higher than the number of cases in inner-city areas accounting for 46.9%. Most patients were treated at hospitals and medical facilities at district and county levels (45%); provincial and city levels (29%) and central levels (21%); only 5% of patients were treated at health stations or at home. The number of cases tended to increase gradually from 0 to 40 years old and then gradually decreased according to age groups, the number of cases recorded was mostly in the age group of students and workers. From 2009 to 2022, the number of recorded Dengue types 1 and Dengue 2 was mainly, in which type Dengue 2 tended to increase, while type Dengue 1 tended to decrease gradually.

In addition to dengue fever, from May 12 to 19, Hanoi recorded 36 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (down 10 cases compared to the previous week), bringing the total number of hand, foot and mouth disease cases since the beginning of 2023 to 588 (up nearly 5 times compared to the same period in 2022). Also last week, the city recorded 49 cases of chickenpox (down 5 cases compared to the previous week), bringing the number of chickenpox cases recorded since the beginning of 2023 in the city to 1,488 (up nearly 19 times compared to the same period last year).
