According to ResQship, the organization's rescue ship Nadir rescued 22 other migrants and took them to the Italian island of Lampedusa. Among those rescued were men, women and children from Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and Mali. According to ResQship, a total of about 40 migrants were on board when the ship departed from Tunisia.

Meanwhile, according to the Italian news agency ANSA, the number of people missing in the sinking is 18. Among the survivors of this sinking are 9 women. The migrants are said to have paid 3,000 Tunisian dinars (about 980 USD) each to board the ship.

This is the latest in a series of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean that have killed scores of migrants. According to figures from the Italian Interior Ministry, more than 14,000 migrants have arrived in the country since the beginning of this year, significantly more than the 5,300 in the same period in 2022 and 4,300 in 2021.
