A shipwreck off the coast of Greece on June 14 killed at least 82 people. The 20-30m fishing boat carrying hundreds of migrants sank off the southwestern coast of Greece, one of the deepest waters in the Mediterranean, while on a journey to Italy. The boat was believed to be carrying 700 migrants from Egypt, Syria and Pakistan, but only 104 were rescued. Greece is still actively searching, although the chances of finding survivors are very low. Meanwhile, Pakistan's Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah said the country was collecting DNA samples from families to send to Greece to help identify the victims.
The rickety ship is believed to have departed from Egypt and picked up migrants in the Libyan coastal city of Tobruk on June 10 before sailing to Italy. According to Greek officials, survivors said each migrant had paid $4,500 for the journey. On June 12, after receiving an alert from Italian authorities about the ship, the Greek coast guard tried to approach the migrant boat before it capsized and sank. Following the incident, Pakistan arrested 14 suspected human traffickers, while Greece arrested nine from Egypt.
