Police Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong shared that the situation for the people at that time was very dangerous but he was not afraid, the only thought in his mind was to save the people.
Four hours after successfully rescuing three people in Pa Vi commune (Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province), Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong (officer of the Traffic Police and Order Team, Meo Vac District Police) shared that he felt very happy to have saved three people in a dangerous situation.
Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong said that, following the unit's assignment, on the afternoon of June 10, he and his teammates helped transport tourists and their luggage out of the flood-damaged area in Pa Vi commune.
At around 5 p.m., at Km06, the section through Suoi Can (the road down to Nho Que 1 River and going to 3 border communes), Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong discovered 3 people crossing the stream and being swept away by the flood. At that time, Lieutenant Tuong saw a man standing in the middle of the stream, a woman and another man being swept away by the strong flood.
According to Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong, the above moment only lasted for a moment and at that time he made a very decisive decision.
"At that time, I was sitting on a crane, so I jumped down and rushed into the middle of the stream to save the woman who was swept away by the flood. After pulling the woman to safety, I continued to save the second person. The third person was rescued while stuck in the middle of the fast-flowing stream. I took off my raincoat to create a rope to pull the people to safety," said Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong.
According to Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong, at the time he rushed out to save people, he was only wearing a raincoat and reflective tape, but not a life jacket.
"The water was flowing very fast at that time. If we didn't hold on, both me and the people could have been swept away," said Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong.
When asked if he was afraid when making the decision to save people, Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong replied, "I was not afraid."
"The situation for the people at that time was very critical, I made the decision very gently, the only thought in my mind was to save the people," shared Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong.
After saving the lives of three people, Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong said he would continue his mission of evacuating tourists and their luggage to safety.
At 8:00 p.m. the same day, the lieutenant born in 1992 returned to his motel in Meo Vac district, where his wife and son were waiting for dinner.
"When she saw the clip of me saving people, my wife was very worried. But when she saw me return safely, she breathed a sigh of relief. I feel very happy right now to save people and return home safely with my family and teammates," shared Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Manh Tuong.
Previously, due to heavy rain from the evening of June 9 to the early morning of June 10, Meo Vac district and several other districts were cut off by floodwaters. Over 100 traffic police officers worked through the night to help over 1,000 tourists get to safety.
