New submarine cable problem

April 22, 2023 17:25

APG, the cable line with the largest bandwidth, has a new error on branch S7 near the Da Nang landing station, while all 5 lines have not been repaired yet.

A representative of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) said that the new problem arose on the APG branch into Vietnam, 206 km from the landing point in Da Nang. There is currently no information on the time to fix the problem.

Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) is the submarine cable with the largest bandwidth connecting to Vietnam, with a length of 10,400 km, capable of providing a maximum bandwidth of 54 Tb/s and put into operation since the end of 2016. At the end of December 2022 and in mid-January, APG encountered errors on the S6 branch towards Hong Kong and the S9 branch with the error location 151 km from the SEA landing station. The two incidents at that time caused a loss of all capacity on the APG line.

The problem on the S9 branch towards Singapore and Japan of APG was fixed at the end of March. Meanwhile, the time to fix the S6 branch is being pushed back to the end of April.

APG route

Vietnam has five active submarine cable lines and for the first time all five lines have encountered problems. In addition to APG, the AAE-1 line has been faulty since November 24, 2022, losing all international connection capacity from Vietnam to Hong Kong and is expected to be repaired from May 2 to May 17.

The AAG line had problems in December 2022 and January, losing capacity in all directions. Of which, the S1I and S1G branches will be fixed in early May, while S1B and S1D have no repair schedule. The IA line had problems in late January and could be restored in April, while the SMW-3 had a minor problem in February but has not been fixed yet.

Explaining the delay, an ISP representative in Vietnam said that the process of repairing international cables faced many challenges, including obtaining permission from countries to access the cable location. The routes are all owned and managed by alliances, including many telecommunications companies in many different countries. Therefore, Vietnamese network operators cannot be proactive in fixing the problem.

On February 9, the Ministry of Information and Communications directed network operators to open more fiber optic cable capacity on land, share and rescue international telecommunications and Internet traffic for each other. The unstable Internet situation gradually decreased, but according to many users, the Internet quality could not return to normal.

The Ministry of Information and Communications aims for Vietnam to have 10 submarine cable lines in the next two years, three of which will be owned by domestic enterprises to avoid dependence on alliances.
