Doctors removed 5 food residues, including dried bamboo shoot residue, from the small intestine, the largest of which was about 6x3 cm in size. This was the cause of the patient's intestinal obstruction.

Thach That District General Hospital (Hanoi) said that the hospital's General Surgery Department had just received and successfully performed emergency surgery on a male patient, NVV (57 years old, in Hanoi), who suffered from intestinal obstruction due to food residue.

The patient was admitted to the hospital with abdominal pain and repeated vomiting. After examination, the patient was diagnosed with intestinal obstruction and was scheduled for emergency surgery.

The food debris, mainly dried bamboo shoots, caused intestinal obstruction in the patient.

Doctors removed 5 food residues from the small intestine, the largest one measuring about 6x3 cm, the smallest one measuring about 4x2 cm. The residues were mainly undigested dried bamboo shoots, which clumped together in the stomach and then moved down to the small intestine, causing blockage. This is a dish that many families ate during the recent traditional Tet holiday.

According to doctors, intestinal obstruction due to food residue is common in the elderly, children, people who cannot chew food thoroughly, patients after gastrectomy, patients with chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic insufficiency or in mentally ill patients who eat their own hair and fur... Consuming large amounts of foods high in tannins such as: persimmons, guava, green mango or fibrous residues such as dried bamboo shoots... can be one of the risks of forming food residue during digestion.

In particular, if eaten when hungry, the stomach is empty, the concentration of stomach acid is high, fruits with a lot of fiber, the resin is easily precipitated, causing the plant fibers to stick together, forming a solid mass of residue that causes intestinal obstruction.

Common symptoms of intestinal obstruction are epigastric pain, bloating, flatulence, vomiting, nausea, fullness after eating, constipation... Therefore, doctors recommend that when experiencing the above signs, patients should go to a medical facility for examination, determine the cause and timely treatment, to avoid complications of intestinal obstruction that threaten the patient's life.
