Accidentally throwing a diamond ring worth one billion VND into the trash, Ms. Chau Thi My Hoa, along with environmental workers and scrap collectors, turned over 11 tons of trash to find the treasure.
On the evening of January 29 (the first day of the Lunar New Year), Mr. Mai Xuan Phuoc, Director of the Waste Management and Treatment Enterprise (Da Nang Urban Environment Joint Stock Company), said that the jewelry box containing a diamond ring worth more than one billion VND was handed over to Ms. Hoa on New Year's Eve.
Earlier that afternoon, while cleaning the house, Ms. Hoa accidentally threw away some of her daughter’s belongings, including an expensive jewelry box, which she had just returned from studying abroad. She only discovered the incident in the evening when the trash in the area had been collected and taken to the compacting station on Le Thanh Nghi Street.
Ms. Hoa immediately went to the garbage station, followed the garbage truck more than 10 km to Khanh Son landfill (Lien Chieu district) and asked for help from environmental workers and many people collecting scrap metal to find her property.
Mr. Phuoc said that New Year's Eve is the peak collection time, the amount of garbage dumped at Khanh Son landfill is very large and workers are also busy completing the work. However, considering the large value of the property, the company decided to support by dumping the entire 11-ton garbage truck to a separate area for searching.
"In the dark, with a huge amount of trash, everyone thought the chance of finding the ring was very slim. Luckily, Mr. Lam Minh Hai, a worker at the Transport Enterprise, discovered the jewelry box in the pile of trash," said Mr. Phuoc.
Receiving her precious property back, Ms. Hoa could not hide her emotions, thanking Mr. Hai and those who helped. She also sent money to support the scrap collectors who participated in the search. Although offered a thank you gift, the company refused, saying "the greatest joy is helping people find their property on New Year's Eve".
