Ministry of Education and Training revises new general education program

Accordingly, the number of elective subjects is 9 and is not divided into subject groups. Students choose 4 subjects out of 9 elective subjects.

On August 3, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) issued a circular amending and supplementing a number of contents in the new General Education Program.

Specifically, this circular adjusts a number of contents in the General Program and the History subject general education program, ensuring the requirement of "designing the History subject in the High School Education Program including both compulsory and optional parts in a reasonable and scientific manner, ensuring the highest efficiency in educating traditions and developing personality for students".

Accordingly, History (from an elective subject in the Social Sciences group) becomes a compulsory subject.

Thus, the program has compulsory subjects and educational activities including: Literature; Math; Foreign Language 1; History; Physical Education; National Defense and Security Education; Experiential and career guidance activities; Local educational content.

At the same time, the number of elective subjects is adjusted to 9 subjects and not divided into groups of subjects. Students choose 4 subjects out of 9 elective subjects. The elective subjects include: Geography; Economic and Legal Education; Physics; Chemistry; Biology; Technology; Information Technology; Music; Fine Arts.

High school education plan after the Ministry of Education and Training adjusted the new general education program.

For the high school program, History is a compulsory subject for all students, with a duration of 52 periods/year (adjusted from 70 periods/year). The optional History study topic includes 35 periods/year (According to Circular 32/2018). The adjustment is based on the following basic principles:

- Comply with the goals and viewpoints of the overall program and the characteristics of the History subject.

- Do not change the issued program structure, consolidate general knowledge in the Basic Education stage, help students understand core knowledge more deeply through topics to develop learners' qualities and abilities.

- Ensure that the amount of knowledge is appropriate to the perception of all students.

- Ensure basic and systematic nature; at the same time, provide career orientation education for high school students.

- The selected topics and content must be suitable for the psychological characteristics of the age and high school students.

- Respect knowledge of national history to enhance education of love for the homeland, national pride, historical traditions and national culture.

- The compulsory History section must ensure feasibility, suitability, and suitability for all students.

- Pay attention to the harmony, logic, and connection between the content of the compulsory History topics (basic, core) and the specialized career-oriented topics.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, the adjustment of the program ensures the use of compiled grade 10 textbooks. Teachers have been trained to implement the program 70 periods/year, so they are qualified to teach 52 periods/year (out of 70 periods/year).

The Ministry of Education and Training said it will continue to train core teachers to deploy mass training.
