Firefighters try to extinguish a fire at the scene of a bus fire in Bangkok, Thailand on October 1, 2024.

The fire broke out as the bus was traveling from the Ayutthaya Historical Park in Ayutthaya province to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) Learning Center in Nonthaburi province. Mr. Trairong Phiwpan, head of the Forensic Department, said that 23 bodies had been found on the bus. According to Mr. Trairong, the confirmation of the total number of victims had been delayed because the burned bus was fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG), so absolute safety had to be ensured before approaching the scene.

The bus driver, identified by police as Saman Chanput, was arrested hours after the fire broke out. He is accused of causing injury by driving, failing to stop to help others and failing to report the accident, according to Thai police.

According to Thai police, the bus driver told investigators that he was driving normally until the bus lost balance due to a problem with the front right tire and crashed into another vehicle, then crashed into a concrete road barrier, causing sparks, which sparked a fire.

Police are currently investigating whether the company that managed the bus complied with safety standards.

The owner of the bus company, Mr. Songwit Chinnaboot, confirmed that the buses had been inspected for safety twice a year as required by regulations. He also said that he would compensate the victim's family as satisfactorily as possible.
