ASEAN Cup 2024: How dangerous are Indonesia and the Philippines to the Vietnamese team?

The massive naturalization strategies of Indonesia and the Philippines have made the two teams formidable. The Vietnamese team must also find a way to avoid being crushed by the two opponents at the ASEAN Cup 2024 in November.

If well prepared and with the right tactics, new coach Kim Sang Sik can lead the Vietnamese team to defeat Indonesia and the Philippines to take the top spot in the group.

Indonesia will be stronger

With a squad of naturalized players playing in Europe combined with a group of quality domestic young players, Indonesia has emerged as a new force in Southeast Asian football. Three consecutive victories over the Vietnamese team in the 2023 Asian Cup and the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup have shown that.

It is worth mentioning that both the old and new naturalized players of Indonesia have played well. Like the second leg 3-0 win over Vietnam at My Dinh Stadium that forced coach Philippe Troussier to leave, the new duo Thom Haye and Ragnar Oratmangoen both played important roles. Thom Haye was the one who took a favorable corner kick for Jay Idez to head in the opening goal. Ragnar dribbled past 4 Vietnamese players before shooting diagonally to increase the score to 2-0.

It is worth mentioning that Indonesia has not yet fielded all of its naturalized players due to injuries and the naturalization procedures have not been completed. However, the 2024 ASEAN Cup is different, coach Shin Tae Yong will have more naturalized goalkeeper Maarten Paes (of Dutch origin, currently playing for Dallas Club in the US professional league) and players who are completing procedures such as Calvin Verdonk, Jens Raven, Ole Romeny (currently playing in the Dutch National Championship).

Philippines unknown

The last time the Philippines advanced from the group stage of the AFF Cup (the predecessor of the ASEAN Cup) was 6 years ago after going 4 games unbeaten. However, the Philippines then lost 2-4 to Vietnam in the semi-finals. In the recent encounter in the second qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup, the Philippines also lost 0-2 to coach Philippe Troussier's team at home.

However, with eight new naturalized players, the Philippines is clearly an unknown quantity. The most prominent of these players is Raphael Obermair (a versatile player who grew up at Bayern Munich's academy and currently plays for German second division side SC Paderborn).

Coach Kim Sang Sik has the advantage of having the opportunity to test the Philippines' ability in the second leg of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at My Dinh Stadium on June 6 before facing off in the 2024 ASEAN Cup. Compared to Indonesia, the Philippines is not as formidable, so they will be a direct opponent of the Vietnamese team in Group B in competing for a ticket to the semi-finals.

Waiting for Coach Kim Sang Sik's talent

The Vietnamese team's consecutive defeats against Indonesia in a short period of time have made Vietnam underestimated in the upcoming match. But that does not mean that coach Kim Sang Sik and his team cannot defeat Indonesia. Because when gathering the best players and placing them in the right positions, Mr. Kim can completely change the sad history of all losses under coach Philippe Troussier.

Former head coach of the Vietnam national team Phan Thanh Hung commented: "The Vietnamese national team still has many quality players. The important thing is how coach Kim Sang Sik chooses and calculates for the upcoming training sessions. If he chooses correctly and promotes the abilities of the old and new players he has selected, it will not be difficult to achieve good results when facing Indonesia and the Philippines."
