Martin Odegaard is the only Premier League player to have created more than 20 chances in all competitions by 2025. But the Norwegian midfielder was ruled out with illness, leaving Arsenal deadlocked at Molineux on January 25.

While still struggling to find an opportunity, the visitors suffered a controversial refereeing decision. In the 43rd minute, Myles Lewis-Skelly kicked Matt Doherty's post to prevent Wolves from counter-attacking, after a failed corner kick. Although the foul was just outside the Wolves penalty area and the tackle was not malicious, referee Michael Oliver still showed a straight red card, causing a strong reaction from Arsenal players.

VAR did not intervene to overturn the on-field decision. At 18 years and 121 days, Lewis-Skelly is the third youngest player to receive a red card in the Premier League, only older than Wayne Rooney against Birmingham in 2002 (17 years and 63 days) and Michael Owen against Man Utd in 1998 (18 years and 117 days).

In the second half, Arsenal created more good chances than in the first 45 minutes despite having only 10 men. In the 53rd minute, Declan Rice broke through on the right wing and shot powerfully from a tight angle, forcing goalkeeper Jose Sa to push the ball away for a corner. Less than ten minutes later, the English midfielder crossed the ball well, but Kai Havertz headed it wide of the goal.

By the 70th minute, both sides were evenly matched. Joao Gomes, eager for the ball, kicked Jurrien Timber in the ankle on the left edge of the penalty area and received a second yellow card.

Four minutes after Wolves were down, Arsenal found the winner thanks to a moment of individual brilliance. Nelson Semedo headed home Gabriel Martinelli's cross, allowing substitute Riccardo Calafiori to connect with a one-touch cross that put the ball beyond Jose Sa's reach.
