According to the design director of the famous car company Mercedes-Benz, Mr. Gordon Wagener, in the next decade, cars can be designed by artificial intelligence (AI) instead of humans.
The car design profession is increasingly stressful
Gordon Wagener, Mercedes-Benz's design director, has caused a stir in public opinion when he said that AI could make car designers obsolete and unemployed within just 10 years. This statement was made by Mr. Wagener at a recent Mercedes-Benz event in Miami (USA).
Obviously, this is bad news for those working in the automotive design industry, and raises many concerns about the future of the auto manufacturing industry in the context of electrification and rapidly developing new technologies.
Throughout the history of automobile development, designers have played an important role in creating the unique identity of each car brand and model.
As more and more vehicles move to electric power, models will become less technically distinct, so the pressure on designers to create more diverse and faster-changing models will increase.
Wagener's successor could be... a machine
"We work with AI every day," Gordon Wagener told ABC News. "AI produces a lot of results in a short period of time, but 99% of the solutions are not up to standard. But the remaining 1% are worth studying and learning from. The biggest problem is that we have to filter out the good designs from the countless poor quality solutions."
"AI will dramatically change the way we design. I think in 10 years, most of the car design process will be done by AI and designers will become unnecessary. My successor will probably be a machine, and the cost to pay will be much cheaper than my salary," Mr. Gordon Wagener said humorously.
There is no denying that AI promises to transform many industries, but the big question remains whether it can design a car that meets every human desire and desire.
Cars are a unique product, attracting customers not only by their features and technology but also by their style and personality. Can a machine breathe life into designs like humans have done for centuries? The answer will probably be clear in the next 10 years or so.
