5 NATO member countries hold naval exercises in the Black Sea

NATO allies including the United States, Italy, Türkiye, Romania and Bulgaria are participating in the Triton-2023 exercise in the Black Sea.

According to the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense, the Triton-2023 exercise will involve members of the above-mentioned navies. The exercises will include the ability to detect, identify and neutralize underwater ammunition and bombs and mines in certain areas of the sea. The navies of the countries will operate in rotation in pre-designated areas.

The purpose of the exercise is to enhance tactical training as well as improve the qualifications and skills of soldiers. In addition, the exercise aims to apply NATO standards for diving and detonating underwater ammunition, bombs and mines, improve procedures as well as logistical and medical support for these activities.

The Bulgarian Defense Ministry statement said this is the third consecutive year the exercise has been conducted in the country's territorial waters.

The exercise is scheduled to last until September 29.
