Hyperlipidemia in the elderly is a lipid metabolism disorder, also known as dyslipidemia in the elderly. This condition is characterized by an increase in bad fat components (LDL - Cholesterol, Triglyceride) and a decrease in good fat components that protect the body (HDL - Cholesterol).

According to statistics, about 26% of Vietnamese people between the ages of 25-74 have fatty blood.

According to statistics, about 26% of Vietnamese people aged 25-74 have fatty blood. For the elderly over 60 years old, high blood fat is common. Below are the reasons for the disease and things to know to help the elderly overcome and reduce the risk of high blood fat. High blood fat in the elderly is caused by many different reasons, which can be due to internal organ function, lifestyle, underlying diseases, etc. Some of the main causes of dyslipidemia in the elderly are as follows:

Due to functional impairment

Due to old age, the elderly's body also gradually ages, the function of organs that regulate blood lipids such as the liver, gallbladder, etc. declines. This leads to difficulties in transporting and eliminating excess fat. Excess fat is not eliminated, leading to fat accumulation in the blood vessel walls, causing hyperlipidemia. In addition, an unreasonable diet, lifestyle and exercise are also one of the causes of dyslipidemia in the elderly. In addition, there are some other less common causes such as diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease and obesity, etc., which are also groups of people at risk of dyslipidemia.

Due to unbalanced diet

If the elderly eat foods high in fat or starch, it will increase the risk of dyslipidemia. Foods high in fat such as butter, milk, animal fat, etc. can increase cholesterol levels. In addition, eating a lot of starch also causes triglycerides to accumulate in the human body, causing dyslipidemia in the elderly.

Increasing fiber and vitamins for the body also plays an important role in reducing the amount of cholesterol and fat absorbed into the body. Fiber comes from vegetables, tubers, fruits, cereals, mushrooms, etc. You should choose steamed and boiled foods, avoid fast food, fried foods with a lot of oil. The protein requirement for the elderly is only 60-70g/day, of which animal protein accounts for 30%. Calcium-rich foods such as fish, shrimp, and crab are also very necessary (100g of shrimp contains 910mg of calcium, 100g of field crab contains 5,040mg of calcium). You should eat small fish, stewed until soft to absorb more calcium from fish bones to help prevent osteoporosis in the elderly.

In addition, change the menu regularly, avoid monotony, pay attention to soft dishes, cut into small pieces and stewed well, and quality soups that are easy to digest. Do not eat too much, especially in the evening, and absolutely do not eat at night because when lying down, the stomach will stretch and push the diaphragm up and compress, hindering the heart's activity. After eating, the elderly should sit or walk gently for 30 minutes to digest food so that it can move to the small intestine more easily.

Habit of being afraid to exercise, little exercise

Many elderly people are afraid to exercise or do little exercise because they are afraid of falling, getting a stroke, etc. and find it unsafe for their health. Especially in cases where the elderly have joint pain, back pain, and a BMI of 30 (obesity level 1), physical activities are limited and they are no longer flexible.

This is not good for health, increases the risk of fat deposition in blood vessel walls... very bad for health.

Elderly people should eat brown rice for good health.

Therefore, the elderly need to consult a doctor to exercise appropriately for their health. Regular exercise in the elderly will improve health, reduce high blood fat and cardiovascular complications.

Some of the most effective exercises for the elderly to reduce high blood fat are walking, cycling, swimming, yoga. Especially walking gently and regularly, this is a safe exercise and brings many health benefits.

It is recommended to walk for only about 60 minutes a day, divided into 2-3 times, should not walk continuously for 60 minutes and should not walk in sunny or cold weather. Elderly people need to follow the principles of warming up the body. At the same time, they need to practice slowly and gradually increase the speed, maintain the exercise for at least 30 minutes and do not do too much activity, combined with drinking enough water.
