Chronic kidney failure is getting younger and younger, partly due to the irregular eating and living habits of many people.

Currently being treated at the Center for Nephrology, Urology and Dialysis, Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi), Mr. NVM (30 years old, residing in Bac Giang) said that 5 years ago, while at work, he had symptoms of stomach pain and nausea.

At the district hospital, Mr. M. was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure. The young man was very surprised because he had no symptoms before and went to work as usual. Before discovering his illness, Mr. M. had always been subjective about his health. Every day, he ate hastily and unscientifically, consumed a lot of processed foods, and drank soft drinks.

Currently, Mr. M's life is tied to a dialysis machine that filters his blood 3 days a week.

During a routine health check-up in 2020, Ms. NTH (30 years old, residing in Hanoi) was warned by the doctor that she had proteinuria in her urine, so she started taking medication. After that, this woman went to Bach Mai Hospital for a check-up and was shocked to receive a diagnosis of chronic kidney failure. In 2022, the female patient noticed that her urine was foamy and took a long time to dissolve. The doctor treated her conservatively with a diet and medication, with monthly follow-up visits.

Recently, Ms. H. felt nauseous, had insomnia, and had a change in taste, so she went to the Center for Nephrology and Dialysis for examination and was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure requiring replacement treatment. At this time, her kidney function was only below 10%. Currently, the patient is waiting for a bypass for the last cycle of dialysis, waiting for the opportunity for a kidney transplant.

The Center for Nephrology, Urology and Dialysis, Bach Mai Hospital is currently treating about 160-180 kidney patients. On average, the center receives 30-40 new cases every day. Notably, the rate of people with kidney failure under the age of 30 is increasing. Many cases are admitted to the hospital too late, unable to receive conservative treatment.

Dr. Nghiem Trung Dung, Director of the Center for Nephrology, Urology and Dialysis, said that the causes of kidney failure in young people, in addition to glomerulonephritis, are other factors.

1. Irregular eating and living habits of young people promote many diseases including chronic kidney failure.

Specifically, Dr. Dung pointed out bad habits including excessive use of drinks of unknown origin, convenient foods such as instant noodles with high salt content; irregular living habits such as sleeping late, lack of exercise leading to obesity.

2. Lazy to check health, when there are unusual symptoms, young people often subjectively think it is normal fatigue. They are afraid to go to medical facilities for examination, leading to not detecting the disease early. Early detection helps prolong the time of conservative treatment with low treatment costs, effective. In the late stage, conservative treatment is shortened, treatment costs are high.

Patients with end-stage chronic kidney failure must undergo one of three treatment methods: periodic hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation.

Doctor Dung recommends that kidney disease often progresses very silently, with few symptoms in the early stages. The best way is to have regular health check-ups and tests to assess kidney function.
