Iranian state television said at least 11 policemen were killed and several others injured in a militant attack on a police station in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan early on December 15.
Clashes between militants and security forces later broke out in the town of Rask, in Sistan-Baluchistan province. Police killed several gunmen.
The Sunni Muslim militant group Jaish al-Adl claimed responsibility for the attack.
Sistan-Baluchistan province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan, is predominantly Sunni Muslim while Iran's majority are Shiite Muslims.
The area is frequently the scene of clashes between security forces and Sunni Muslim rebels, as well as drug traffickers.
