Visiting the family of Mr. Pham Van Dien, born in 1978, in Gia Coc village, Tu Cuong commune (Thanh Mien), everyone felt sorry when witnessing the difficult life of the mother and son.

After the accident, Mr. Dien was paralyzed in both legs.

According to the leader of Tu Cuong commune, Dien's family's situation is particularly difficult. Dien had a traffic accident but his family did not have the means to treat him, so both his legs were paralyzed. Dien's mother, Nguyen Thi Trieu, is nearly 90 years old this year. Because of her old age and heart disease, she has not been able to walk for a long time.

Dien and his mother live in a small house deep in an alley. The three-room house was built in 1978 and is now in serious disrepair. It is hot and stuffy in the hot season and cold in the winter. All the furniture in the house is old and outdated. Since both mother and son cannot walk, relatives installed two toilets right next to the bed.

Mr. Dien said that in 2003, he got married and lived with his wife's family in Lang Son. A few years later, he and his wife separated because they could not live together. In 2009, due to his poor health and inability to do heavy labor, he returned to his hometown. Every day, he went to catch crabs and snails in the fields to help his mother and son survive. "There are 6 siblings in my family, 2 of whom are married far away. The remaining siblings live nearby but are not very well off financially. In the past, although I was weak, I could still do light work to earn money. Now...", Mr. Dien said sadly.

The biggest incident in Mr. Dien's life happened one night at the end of 2019. While walking home, he was hit by a car and broke both his legs. After causing the accident, the driver fled. Luckily, he was discovered by people and taken to the emergency room in time. After that, because the surgery cost was too much while his family could not afford it, Mr. Dien accepted being paralyzed in both legs. "I broke both my legs, the surgery cost up to hundreds of millions of dong. This amount of money is too much for my family," Mr. Dien said.

A year after Mr. Dien had an accident, his mother broke her arm. Although she had a cast, due to old age, the bone had difficulty healing. Her strength also gradually weakened, and she had to stay in one place. Her eldest daughter-in-law helped her with eating and personal hygiene. "On days when she was busy with farm work and couldn't come home in time, I had to crawl down to the floor to cook for the two of us. Gradually, she got used to it, so my sister-in-law had less trouble. Currently, my mother and I receive a monthly subsidy of more than 1 million VND from the State, just enough for medicine. All other living expenses are covered by siblings and relatives. I dream of having the means to renovate the house to make it less dilapidated," said Mr. Dien.

Mr. Dien's mother and son are in dire need of the community's help. Please send any help to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich (Mr. Dien's sister-in-law), account number 07006084871800068 Ocean Bank.
