AC Milan, AS Roma, Freiburg, Sporting CP, Benfica, Qarabag, Sparta Prague and Marseille are the teams that have advanced from the play-off round to the last 16 of the Europa League this season.
The Europa League Round of 16 has officially determined the 16 teams after the second leg of the play-off round ended on the morning of February 23.
The eight clubs that qualified for the play-off round after the Europa League were AC Milan, AS Roma, Freiburg, Sporting CP, Benfica, Qarabag, Sparta Prague and Marseille.
Notably, among these, only 2 teams relegated from the Champions League, AC Milan and Benfica, are still continuing their journey.
AC Milan did not get a good result when they lost 2-3 to Rennes, creating an attractive score chase at Roazhon Park Stadium.
However, the defeat could not prevent AC Milan from advancing to the round of 16 with a 5-3 aggregate victory after two matches.
In the first leg, Milan beat Rennes 3-0 thanks to goals from Ruben Loftus-Cheek (double) and Rafael Leão.
Along with AC Milan, Benfica could only draw 0-0 in the second leg at Toulouse, but still won the right to go through thanks to a 2-1 win in the first leg.
Meanwhile, six other teams, Galatasaray, Lens, Braga, Feyenoord, Young Boys, and Shakhtar Donetsk, have all exited European competition.
In the play-off round, France had 4 teams participating but only Marseille continued their journey.
Marseille beat Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 in the second leg, to win 5-3 on aggregate.
The remaining French team Lens were also eliminated after a 2-3 loss to Freiburg.
Previously, Liverpool, Bayer Leverkusen, Atalanta, West Ham United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Rangers, Villarreal and Slavia Prague were the teams that won direct tickets to the round of 16 thanks to their group-top performance.
As planned, at 6:00 p.m. on February 23, UEFA will conduct the draw for the round of 16 of the Europa League 2023-2024.
