Vietnam, Thailand, India and Cambodia led the sharp increase in semiconductor chip exports to the US market this year. Vietnam has accounted for more than 10% of US chip imports worldwide for seven consecutive months.

US semiconductor chip imports reached $4.86 billion in February 2023, up 17% from 2022, according to US Census data. Asia accounted for 83% of all US semiconductor chip imports worldwide. India saw its shipments of semiconductor chips to the US increase 34-fold to $152 million; while Cambodia saw an impressive 698% growth to $166 million, an unprecedented revenue in previous years.

According to Bloomberg, Vietnam and Thailand are both large semiconductor chip manufacturing markets, and have also increased their trade with the US in this field by 75% and 62% respectively. Vietnam alone has accounted for more than 10% of the US chip imports worldwide for 7 consecutive months.

In February 2023, Vietnam exported chips to the US with a turnover of 562.5 million USD, compared to only 321.7 million USD in February 2022. In terms of turnover, Vietnam ranked 3rd in Asia - after Malaysia and Taiwan - in exporting semiconductor chips to the US.

U.S. officials have recently expressed growing concerns about their country’s overreliance on foreign chip suppliers, such as South Korea and Taiwan, to produce its most advanced chips. The February figures are the latest in a series of moves by the U.S. to diversify its electronics supply chain, including moves by Apple Inc. to shift iPhone production out of China to India.

Malaysia, a traditional stronghold that has always been the top chip exporter to the US, saw its market share fall to 20% in February. Semiconductors are the brains of modern electronics, from computers to phones to home appliances.

The worsening relationship between Washington and Beijing has forced both countries to rethink their chip supply strategies for the world’s leading electronics industry. Taiwan — often a flashpoint between the US and China — increased its chip shipments to the US by 4.3% in February 2023 compared to 2022 and accounted for 15% of US imports.
