VAR is used in V-League

VAR - video assistant referee technology - will be used for the first time in Vietnam, in the match between Viettel and Ha Tinh at Hang Day Stadium on July 27.

Referee Hoang Ngoc Ha used VAR during training at VFF in June.

The person in charge of operating the VAR room is Mr. Mai Xuan Hung. The referee on the field is Mr. Ngo Duy Lan and assistants Nguyen Trung Hau and Pham Hoai Tam.

Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) - the organizer of V-League, First Division and National Cup - currently has two VAR cars. However, they will only use this technology for one match in the next round for testing. A VPF leader said: "If everything goes well, VAR will be widely applied in the next rounds."

Previously, FIFA recommended that VPF should not immediately apply VAR to intense matches, such as championship matches or promotion and relegation matches, but instead choose lighter matches for referees to get used to. In the first few matches applying VAR technology, FIFA will send an advisor to work to supervise and support the operation of VAR in official matches. The VAR monitoring process in Vietnam will be closely monitored by FIFA for three years.

The referee board also sent people to train Viettel and Ha Tinh clubs on VAR technology. Viettel coach Thach Bao Khanh said he had a preliminary understanding and hoped that VAR would help make the match fairer and help referees avoid mistakes.

Viettel is currently fourth with 25 points, three points behind leaders Hanoi Police. Ha Tinh is sixth, with 20 points after 15 matches.

VPF has been planning to use VAR for four years. However, due to funding issues and FIFA licensing, video technology was only introduced into the V-League in Phase II of this season. Since the beginning of the year, FIFA experts have come to guide, organize testing, evaluate and license 18 Vietnamese referees.
