At noon on January 28, "DeepSeek - AI Assistant" rose to the number one position in the most downloaded free apps chart on the App Store and was in the top 5 in the Performance category on CH Play.

On the app store, many users from Vietnam also left comments praising DeepSeek, comparing it to products from OpenAI and Google. "I think this is the best free AI application I've ever known. It's smart, responsive, and the quality can reach 9/10 compared to ChatGPT Pro, while it's free," commented a user named Thanh.

Some suggested that the application add the feature of logging in with an account and password instead of the code sent to the phone, and upgrade the optimization tools for the Vietnamese market.

DeepSeek quickly became a global sensation after being released on app stores for about two weeks. In many markets, including the US - home to a series of AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta AI, DeepSeek also won the first place.

On the morning of January 28, DeepSeek's website displayed a message saying it was "under attack on a large scale", making it difficult to create an account.

According to mobile app analytics firm Appfigures, DeepSeek is currently the number one free app on the App Store in at least 52 countries and territories as of the morning of January 28. The app is in the top 10 free apps in 111 countries on the App Store and 18 countries on Google Play. The DeepSeek app recorded around a million downloads across the two platforms last weekend, but that number increased to 2.6 million by January 27.

More than 80% of all downloads of DeepSeek’s mobile app occurred in the past seven days, 300% more than Perplexity, another popular AI app, according to analytics firm Sensor Tower. 23% of downloads were from the Chinese market, 15% from the US.

"While hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT and Gemini every month, DeepSeek proves that the consumer AI space is still alive and that new competitors shouldn't be ruled out," TechCrunch commented.

DeepSeek ranked No. 1 on the App Store in Vietnam on the afternoon of January 28.

DeepSeek was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, co-founder of AI investment fund High-Flyer. The company began developing DeepSeek in April 2023 with the aim of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), a goal similar to what OpenAI and many other companies are pursuing.

DeepSeek started to attract attention last week when it released R1, a reasoning model that competes with OpenAI's o1. The Chinese product is unique in that it is open source, meaning other AI developers can use and contribute to it, similar to Meta's Llama model.

Additionally, they were built with modest resources due to restrictions on chip imports into China, and were estimated to cost $5.6 million to train, a fraction of the models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Meta.
