As this year's college entrance exam (also known as gaokao) in China began on June 7, some provinces and cities in the country have for the first time used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to monitor cheating behaviors in the exam to ensure the fairness of the exam.

The Gaokao is considered the most important exam in a student's life in China, so ensuring timely detection of cheating is crucial.

During this year's college entrance examination, Guangdong Province deployed a real-time AI system for the first time at 386 examination sites. Using advanced AI technology, the system can detect abnormal behaviors such as cheating and copying in real time by analyzing image and video data in the examination room and immediately send alerts to invigilators for further action.

Meanwhile, Hainan province is piloting the use of AI to check and monitor at exam sites, promptly detecting and warning of disciplinary violations.

Chongqing City in southwest China also uses AI systems at some exam sites to analyze and study abnormal behavior during exams.

This year, Beijing has upgraded the intelligent monitoring system used in the college entrance exam, adding more sensitive monitoring and image recognition capabilities. Turning the head, bending down to pick up objects, communication between invigilators and students... such small actions will be recorded by the video system and through that, suspicious violations of each candidate can be quickly identified.

In addition, many cities in China have used radar to find their way, deployed patrol robots and drones to assist candidates in this national exam.

Analysts note that although AI technology cannot completely replace human supervision, it can help protect the fairness of college entrance exams and reduce pressure on invigilators.

As AI technology continues to evolve, there will be many other technologies applied to college entrance exams to reduce, or even eliminate, cheating in exams.
