24-year-old defender Luke Fleurs, who plays for Kaizer Chiefs in the South African Premiership (DStv) was shot dead during a botched robbery on the night of 3 April.
Centre-back Luke Fleurs was born in Cape Town and represented South Africa at the 2021 Olympic Games. The 24-year-old joined DStv Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs last October and is regarded as one of the most talented defenders in South African football.
Luke Fleurs previously played for the South African Olympic team four times and was called up to the South African national team twice but never played a minute. The South African Football Federation has yet to reveal the cause of Luke Fleurs' death. But according to information from the South African press, Luke Fleurs was shot dead in a "failed robbery" in Johannesburg.
"Police are currently awaiting information on the incident. We will comment further on the matter as soon as we have further details," said South African police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo.
Many South African fans have sent their condolences over Luke Fleurs' death. One wrote: "Rest in peace Luke. So sad and so sorry, my deepest condolences to his loved ones."
Another commented: "Rest in peace King. Sad day for South African sport." Another fan wrote: "I can't believe this. He had his whole life ahead of him. I saw him just a few days ago and now he's gone."
