The People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City has just sentenced defendant Tran Thien Chau Lam to 12 years in prison for activities aimed at overthrowing the people's government.
On January 16, the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City held a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Tran Thien Chau Lam (born in 1991, residing in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City) to 12 years in prison for activities aimed at overthrowing the people's government.
According to the indictment, in early 2024, through the fight against national security crimes, the Internal Security Department (Ho Chi Minh City Police) discovered that Lam used Facebook and WhatsApp accounts to attract many people who were soldiers or had relatives who were soldiers in the old regime to establish the group "Descendants - Council for recruiting soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam". The purpose of this group was to discuss a number of activities to create buzz and develop forces to overthrow the government.
On June 12, 2024, Lam was invited by Binh Chanh District Police to work on related posts posted on Facebook. To avoid detection, Lam stopped using Facebook.
However, Lam contacted Lam Thi Phuong Mai, a member of the group "Descendants - Council for recruiting soldiers of the Republic of Vietnam", calling on Mai to create a group "Family" on WhatsApp so that other members could continue to participate in the activities.
In addition, Lam also organized for members to meet in person (3-4 times) at coffee shops in Hoc Mon district, district 8, to exchange and discuss action plans.
The Security Investigation Agency (SIA) searched the residence of Lam and other members of the group, seizing a number of costumes, badges, and flags of the old regime.
Checking the phones of Lam and related people, authorities discovered many exchanges about plans and discussions to carry out a number of bombing and assassination activities against the government.
On July 23, 2024, Tran Thien Chau Lam was arrested by the Investigation Security Agency. Regarding Lam Thi Phuong Mai and related subjects, the Investigation Security Agency determined that due to limited political awareness, repentance... there is no need to prosecute criminally but only impose administrative sanctions.
At court, defendant Tran Thien Chau Lam admitted all his crimes and clearly showed remorse.
