Defender Trent Alexander-Arnold scored a superb free-kick in England's 3-1 win over Finland in the fourth round of Group B2 of the UEFA Nations League.
Three days after losing to Greece at Wembley, England rallied to claim all three points from Helsinki. Midfielder Jack Grealish opened the scoring, Alexander-Arnold converted a free-kick and Declan Rice sealed the win for the visitors. Finland only pulled one back late on and were unable to avoid a fourth straight defeat.
Lee Carsley and his team's victory was predicted, as they are ranked seventh in the world, while their opponents are ranked 65th, according to Elo football. Finland is behind Asian representatives like Jordan, so they only had the ball for 30% of the match. Carsley made six changes compared to the victory, but it was enough to overwhelm the Nordic representatives.
A discovery under Carsley was former Man Utd midfielder Angel Gomes. The 1.66m tall central midfielder played a clever pass for Grealish to shoot low into the right corner to open the scoring in a one-on-one situation. Gomes, 24, left Man Utd for free in the summer of 2020 to join Lille, continuing his successful career.
Carsley also experimented with a surprising left-back role, with Alexander-Arnold given the task. Under Gareth Southgate, he sometimes played as a central midfielder but mainly as a right-back. In the left-wing role, the Liverpool defender had no trouble, even scoring a free kick from about 25 metres to the left to make it 2-0.
England’s victory was assured in the 84th minute, when substitute Ollie Watkins drove down the left and crossed for Rice to tap into the net from close range. Captain Harry Kane and rising talent Cole Palmer started the game, but were largely absent, while Watkins once again shone when given the chance, as he did when he scored the winner in the Euro 2024 semi-final against the Netherlands.
The Three Lions are currently playing in League B of the Nations League, and will be promoted if they top Group B2. However, they need to get revenge on Greece in the next round of matches, otherwise they will likely have to play in a play-off match for promotion.
