Dong Du Secondary and High School, Buon Ma Thuot City, stopped checking students' belongings and body every morning, after 10 years of doing this.

This move by the school on the morning of October 6 was under the direction of the Dak Lak Department of Education and Training last night.

Previously, every day when entering the main gate, about 2,600 students of Dong Du Secondary and High School had to let security guards, supervisors, and teachers check their bags, jacket pockets, and use security scanners to see if they were carrying prohibited items. Any sharp objects, objects that could cause injury, or cigarettes... were confiscated by the school.

Mr. Do Tuong Hiep, Deputy Director of the Department, said that at the beginning of the new school year, the Department directed schools to "build school culture and strengthen prevention of school riots", on the basis of creating a safe, friendly, and respectful environment.

He acknowledged that the purpose of checking belongings and searching students to avoid prohibited items at Dong Du Secondary and High School was basically good, but the approach to implementation was not correct. Therefore, the Department requested to stop.

According to Mr. Le Ngoc Son, Principal of Dong Du Secondary and High School, checking and inspecting students is to ensure the safety of the students and the school. This has been done for 10 years.

"Thanks to that, the school has limited school violence," he said, adding that he had not previously seen any regulations from the education sector prohibiting checking students' belongings before entering school.

Dong Du Secondary and High School is a non-public school with more than 2,600 students, of which about 2,000 are boarding students. The school has to spend 60 million VND per month for 55 staff members to check on the students every day. However, many students and parents find it annoying.

Lawyer Cao Anh Sang, Dak Lak Bar Association, said that only the competent authority, the police, can search people in certain cases. The school's actions violated the students' privacy and personal rights, possibly causing them mental trauma.
