China affirms to protect national interests in tariff issue with US

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said China would defend its 'national interests' after US President Donald Trump said he could impose 10% tariffs on Chinese imports.

Speaking at a press conference, Ms. Mao Ning affirmed that China "resolutely defends its national interests" and emphasized that "there is no winner in a trade war or a tariff war." According to the spokesperson, China is willing to maintain communication with the US to resolve differences, expand mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote stable and sustainable development in the relationship between the two countries.

Previously, on January 21 - one day after being sworn in for his second term, US President Donald Trump left open the possibility of imposing an additional 10% tax on Chinese imports as early as February 1. On the same day, the 47th owner of the White House signed decrees imposing a 25% tax on all products exported to the US market from Canada and Mexico.

According to official trade data, China, Canada and Mexico are the largest trading partners of the United States.
