China's Ministry of Finance announced that the country will impose additional tariffs of up to 84% on goods imported from the US.
Reuters news agency (UK) reported that the Chinese Ministry of Finance confirmed that the 84% tax rate will take effect from April 10.
Earlier, on April 4, China announced that it would impose an additional 34% tariff on all goods imported from the US. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce said this was a response to the reciprocal tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump on the afternoon of April 2. In addition, China has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the US over the reciprocal tariffs.
Without waiting long, on April 7, President Trump warned that the US would impose an additional 50% tax on goods from China if the country did not withdraw the 34% retaliatory tax. President Trump announced on social media that the deadline for China to withdraw the tax was April 8. The US leader emphasized that if Beijing did not withdraw the retaliatory tax, the additional US tax on China would push the total tax rate to over 100%.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on April 8 that a 104% tariff on Chinese imports will take effect at midnight on April 9, US time.
The reciprocal tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on dozens of economies around the world took effect at 0:01 on April 9, US time, or 11:01 Vietnam time.
Previously, President Donald Trump announced a 10% base tariff on imported goods into the US from April 5, along with corresponding tariffs on each country that is the US's trading partner from April 9.
The White House announced on April 8 that nearly 70 countries have proactively contacted the Trump administration to initiate negotiations to minimize the impact of his new tariff policy.
