According to Bloomberg, President Donald Trump continues to urge China to proactively contact him to initiate negotiations to resolve the escalating trade tensions between the world's two largest economies.

“The ball is now in China’s court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don’t need to make a deal with them,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on April 15. She said she read a statement requested by President Trump.

“There is no difference between China and any other country, except that they are much bigger, and China wants what we have, what every country wants, what we have — the American consumer — in other words, they want our money,” the statement continued.

The comments are a fresh sign that both the US and China are taking a tough stance on each other, and that the trade war between the two sides - which has seen a series of tariffs raised to unprecedented levels - is far from over.

China has reportedly asked its airlines to stop accepting new aircraft from US-based Boeing, in Beijing’s latest retaliation against President Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on Chinese exports to 145 percent, according to people familiar with the matter.

Early on April 15, the US President also posted an article on social media criticizing China, accusing the Chinese government of "just canceling a major deal with Boeing" that was signed during his first term.

The Trump administration said it is negotiating with dozens of other trading partners to reduce trade barriers in exchange for exemptions or reductions from the steep tariffs that Trump has imposed. Those tariffs were suspended for 90 days starting April 10 to allow for negotiations.

According to multiple sources, President Trump is currently considering at least 15 proposals from various countries. According to Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Trump “wants to personally sign all of these agreements.”

“There’s a lot of work to be done. We understand that, but we believe we can announce some agreements very soon,” the White House press secretary added, without revealing which countries were close to reaching an agreement.

However, so far, the US and China are still said to have not conducted any high-level dialogue. Both sides continue to attack each other, as well as constantly increase tariffs in response to the other side. Recently, Beijing announced a 125% tariff on all US goods starting April 12 - the latest escalation since Mr. Trump announced a 34% reciprocal tariff on imports from China.

The US president has repeatedly raised tariffs every time China retaliates. The White House has maintained that China should be the one to initiate contact if it wants to negotiate. Meanwhile, Beijing says it is unclear what the US really wants from the talks.
