China's Ministry of Commerce said this was a step in response to the 34% reciprocal tax announced by US President Donald Trump on the afternoon of April 2 local time, or the morning of April 3 Vietnam time.

In addition, China has also filed a lawsuit against the United States with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the above reciprocal tax rate.

Under the new tax policy, the US imposes a 10% base tax on all goods entering the US, effective from April 5. In addition, the US has imposed additional reciprocal taxes on dozens of countries and territories since April 9. China is subject to a 34% reciprocal tax, and if the previously imposed 20% tax is added, the total tax on Chinese goods exported to the US will reach 54%.

China’s move comes as President Trump says he’s open to a deal to trade tariff cuts for China in exchange for Beijing agreeing to sell TikTok, the video-sharing platform owned by ByteDance and facing an April 5 deadline to shut down its U.S. operations unless a new, non-Chinese owner is found.
