TikTok is a popular video application but it is also an online environment that contains many products with negative content that is not suitable for teenagers.

Over-following the trend

Recently, social media users are no longer unfamiliar with "ghost scare" clips, in which parents lock the door and then lock their children in the room to follow the trend on TikTok. Notably, the children in the above clip all appear panicked, scared, screaming, banging on the door... but still attract millions of views and interactions. Users can also easily search for keywords "ghost scare children", "parents scare children and the ending"... on the TikTok application. According to some psychological experts, this seemingly harmless prank can cause psychological trauma to young children.

Each video on TikTok is only a few dozen seconds long, but its ability to convey information, eye-catching images, and catchy background music attracts a large number of young people to follow. However, many offensive clips are made by many young people to live a virtual life, attract "views", from "dressing revealingly in all places" to intentionally "showing off sensitive parts of the body"... In addition, many trends that challenge players such as "Eat carrots with mustard to lose weight", "Whiten teeth at home with baking soda"... are approached by many young people. Mr. Vu Van Vu in Binh Giang district said that just because he followed the "trend" on TikTok with the game "Frozen honey challenge", his son made his own drink by mixing honey with chili sauce and milk tea, then ate it and felt nauseous and had a stomachache.

As a parent with a 5th grader who is very addicted to TikTok, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh in Chi Minh commune (Tu Ky) could not hide her worries. She said that her daughter often "plays" TikTok for 4-5 hours a day but the family cannot supervise. Recently, many of her daughter's statements startled her, such as "God created earthquakes and your head is the highlight", "I don't lack money but I don't have a lot"... When asking her daughter, Ms. Thanh learned that the above statements were trending on TikTok.

"I see that my child can learn dance moves or how to create objects on TikTok. However, there are also many videos with offensive and violent images, even challenging games that can affect children's psychology, so I am quite worried when my child uses this social network," said Ms. Thanh.

Potential danger

According to recent statistics, the number of TikTok users in Vietnam is ranked 6th in the world, of which 4 million people under 18 years old use this social network. Therefore, children can fall into a "maze" of unfiltered videos. Anyone can download the TikTok application, even easily become a "TikToker".

Without adult guidance, using TikTok can affect the mental and physical health of many children. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu in Ninh Giang district said that her son, because he learned to use TikTok, used two fingers to pinch his cheek. As a result, his face was bruised as if he had been beaten.

Currently, many young people can use the TikTok application for entertainment and content creation. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Anh, Secretary of Thanh Mien District Youth Union, many good and meaningful contents on TikTok are created by young people to inspire and spread such as fashion, beauty, education... Many young people can even use TikTok as a channel to generate income for themselves. However, this social network also has negative aspects.

Teacher Cao Thi Thu Hang, in charge of the Department of Psychology - Education, Hai Duong College, warns that besides the creativity and convenience that TikTok brings, there are still many negative aspects. Parents need to closely monitor their children's use of this application by regularly reviewing the TikTok history that their children have viewed on their smartphones or computers. Guide your children to fun and useful things. In addition, let your children participate in outdoor activities to limit the use of applications on mobile phones, TVs, computers, etc.
