US President Donald Trump on March 13 threatened to impose a 200% tax on European wine, champagne and other alcoholic beverages if the European Union (EU) continues its plan to tax US whiskey.

Previously, on March 12, the European Commission (EC) announced that it would "implement a series of countermeasures" from April 1 in response to the US imposing a 25% tax on steel and aluminum imports from Europe.

In a social media post, Mr. Trump announced that if the EU does not immediately remove its proposed tariffs on American whiskey, the US will soon impose a 200% tariff on all wines and alcoholic beverages imported from France and other EU member states.

Since taking office in January, US President Donald Trump has imposed tariffs on major trading partners including China, Canada and Mexico, citing their failure to stem the flow of deadly fentanyl and related precursors into the US.

This month, Mr. Trump increased the general 10% tariff he had previously imposed on Chinese products to 20%.

In addition, the 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports imposed by US President Donald Trump took effect from 0:01 local time on March 12 (ie 11:01 the same day Vietnam time), marking a new phase in the trade war between the US and its major trading partners.

The US sees the move as an effort to protect the US steel industry and American workers as the industry declines and faces fierce competition from abroad, especially from Asia.
