President-elect Trump chooses his in-law as US Ambassador to France

In a post on the social network Truth Social on November 30, Mr. Trump praised Charles Kushner's negotiating ability and business experience, believing that these qualities will benefit the United States.

"He is a brilliant business leader, philanthropist, and negotiator who represents our country and fiercely defends our national interests," Trump wrote. "Congratulations to Charles, his wonderful wife Seryl, your four children, and your 14 grandchildren."

Mr. Kushner, 70, is the founder of Kushner Companies and a close business partner of Mr. Trump. His son, Jared Kushner, married Ivanka Trump in 2009 and became a powerful advisor to his father-in-law.

During President Trump's first term, Jared Kushner was appointed as a senior adviser at the White House, regularly involved in foreign policy in the Middle East.

"Charles' son, Jared, has been a great supporter of mine at the White House, especially on Operation Warp Speed ​​(the development of a vaccine during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020), criminal justice reform, and the Abraham Accords (the Israel-United Arab Emirates peace treaty). Together with Charles, we will develop a relationship with France, our oldest and one of our best allies," Trump wrote.

Charles Kushner was pardoned by Trump in December 2020, clearing his convictions for tax evasion and violating political finance laws. The 2005 case resulted in a two-year prison sentence for Charles Kushner.

It is not uncommon in American politics for political donors or people close to the president to be appointed ambassadors. If confirmed by the Senate to serve as US ambassador to France, Mr. Kushner would succeed Denise Bauer, a former ambassador to Belgium and major donor to the Democratic Party.
