Switzerland temporarily ranked second in Group A of EURO 2024 after defeating Hungary with a score of 3-1.
The second match of the EURO 2024 group stage was between Hungary and Switzerland at the RheinEnergieStadion (Cologne, Germany). The team that played better for most of the match was Switzerland, who won.
The Swiss team started the game better than their opponents. The goal came early for this team after just over 10 minutes of play. Michel Aebischer made an assist for Kwadwo Duah to score against Hungary.
The Swiss striker was disappointed when he saw the referee call for offside. However, VAR determined that the goal was valid. The referee reversed the decision and Switzerland opened the scoring. This was Duah's first goal for the national team.
Switzerland played proactively but did not create many chances. Meanwhile, Hungary was stuck in organizing attacks and relied only on set pieces. Their most expected star, Dominik Szoboszlai, was lackluster.
At the end of the first half, Aebischer continued to shine with a beautiful long-range shot. Switzerland led 2-0 after the first half of the match with a favorable position.
In the second half, coach Murat Yakin's team continued to control the situation. Hungary tried to push up the formation and keep the ball more. However, while the opponent was stuck, Switzerland launched more shots.
The match went from dull to more exciting when Hungary reduced the score in the 67th minute. Barnabas Varga leaned over to head the ball into the net from close range to rekindle hope for the team.
However, Hungary's efforts in the remaining time of the match were not enough to earn them a point. On the contrary, the team conceded another goal in extra time. Breel Embolo dashed their opponents' hopes by flicking the ball over the Hungarian goalkeeper's head.
