According to updated information on July 23, the death toll in the landslide in Gofa district, a remote area in southern Ethiopia, has increased to 229 people.
The head of the national disaster response agency in the Gofa region said that search and rescue operations were still underway despite difficulties at the scene. It is not ruled out that some people are still missing in this disaster.
The landslide occurred on the morning of July 22 following heavy rains. Ethiopia is experiencing the rainy season that began in July and is expected to last until mid-September.
The Gofa area has experienced catastrophic landslides before, with at least 32 people killed in two landslides just a week apart in 2018.
