Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, former Deputy Minister of National Defense, passed away due to a serious illness at the age of 65.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh

After a period of serious illness, despite the devoted care and treatment of the Party, State, army, professors, doctors, and family, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, former Deputy Minister of National Defense, passed away early this morning, September 14, at his home.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh was born on May 15, 1959 in Hanoi. However, his official biography states that he was born in 1957 because he added two years to his age to be old enough to join the army when he applied to join the army.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh is from Quang Thang commune, Quang Dien district, Thua Thien Hue province. He is the son of General Nguyen Chi Thanh, the late director of the General Department of Politics of the Vietnam People's Army.

Having matured through many positions in the defense intelligence industry, in November 1999, he was appointed to the position of Deputy Director General of the Defense Intelligence Department with the rank of colonel.

In June 2000, he was appointed Director General of the General Department of Defense Intelligence. In February 2002, he was promoted to the rank of Major General. In December 2004, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

In March 2009, Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh was appointed Deputy Minister of National Defense and Director General of the General Department of Defense Intelligence. In October 2009, he successfully defended his doctoral thesis in law.

Since the end of 2009, he has stopped holding the position of Director General of the General Department of Defense Intelligence to wholeheartedly carry out the important responsibility of Deputy Minister of Defense in charge of foreign affairs.

At the 11th National Party Congress in January 2011, Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Minister of National Defense, was elected to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam. The 11th Congress was also the first congress to have a document directly addressing defense diplomacy.

In October 2013, Dr. Nguyen Chi Vinh was recognized by the State Council of Professors as a professor specializing in military science.

In December 2013, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.

In January 2016, at the 12th National Congress of the Party, he was re-elected as a member of the Central Executive Committee of the 12th Communist Party of Vietnam.

In April 2016, he was appointed by the Politburo to join the Central Military Commission Standing Committee.

On February 20, 2017, the Prime Minister reappointed Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh to the position of Deputy Minister of National Defense.

In recognition of Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh's contributions, the Party and State have awarded him many noble awards: First, Second and Third Class Military Exploit Medals; First, Second and Third Class Military Exploit Medals; First Class Independence Medal; 40-year Party membership badge.

Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh was also awarded: First Class Fatherland Defense Medal of Cambodia; Royal Sahametrei Medal of Mohaséreivath (Grand Cross) of Cambodia; Friendship Medal of the Russian Federation; Antonio Maceo Medal of the Republic of Cuba; and Order of the Rising Sun of Japan.

In December 2021, Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh retired from work after completing all duties and responsibilities of a soldier who devoted himself to the army and the country.
