Austria defeated Poland 3-1 in the second match of Group D of EURO 2024.
Robert Lewandowski returned to the Poland squad as a substitute against Austria, but the Barcelona forward was unable to help his side earn their first point at EURO 2024.
The Austrian team started the match better than their opponents. Center back Gernot Trauner - one of two changes made by coach Ralf Rangnick compared to the previous match - opened the scoring in the 9th minute with a header.
After being outplayed and behind in the first half, the Polish team started to attack back. The team nicknamed "White Eagles" created many good threats.
Poland equalized in the first half from a messy corner kick in front of the opponent's goal. Krzysztof Piatek scored.
After the break, the Austrian team re-established their dominance. The match became more exciting and fierce as both teams showed their determination to win to keep their hopes of passing the group stage alive.
The Polish team sent Lewandowski onto the field in the 60th minute. However, before the 35-year-old striker could make any impact other than receiving a yellow card, his team conceded two more goals.
Christoph Baumgartner put Austria ahead in the 66th minute. Poland pushed up and left themselves vulnerable at the back. Marcel Sabitzer took advantage of one of these situations to win a penalty for Austria. Marko Arnautovic made no mistake and made it 3-1.
Poland tried to attack late in the match. However, with Robert Lewandowski lacking a shot on target, Austria managed to maintain their two-goal lead.
