According to the Overview and Assessment Report on the Labor Market for the First 6 Months of 2024 by the mid-level and senior personnel recruitment brand Navigos Search (part of Navigos Group), the labor market in the first half of this year has many positive signs.

Per capita income witnessed significant growth, showing that workers' living standards are gradually improving. Specifically, average income reached 7.5 million VND/month, up 7.4% over the same period last year.

Uneven income growth

According to Navigos Search's report, male workers' income reached 8.5 million VND/month and female workers' income reached 6.4 million VND/month.

The average income of workers in urban areas is 9.1 million VND/month. Meanwhile, the figure in rural areas is 6.5 million VND/month.

It can be seen that the income gap between urban and rural areas is still quite large, reflecting the unevenness in economic development and labor market between the two regions.

The gap is also seen in the underemployment rate among working-age people (including employed people who want to work overtime; are willing to work overtime; and actually work less than 35 hours/week).

According to recorded data, in the first 6 months of the year, the unemployment rate among working age people reached 2.05%, an increase of 0.05% over the same period last year.

Of which, the unemployment rate in urban areas decreased by 0.12% to 1.37%. In contrast, the unemployment rate in rural areas increased by 0.17% to 2.49%.

Shifting labor resources to urban areas

In the first 6 months of 2024, the number of employed workers grew strongly, reaching 51.4 million people. Of which, the urban area reached 19.7 million people, an increase of 687.9 thousand people.

In contrast, the number of employed workers in rural areas decreased to 31.7 million. This shows a shift of labor resources to urban centers, consistent with the urbanization and industrialization trends of the economy.

In addition, the rate of trained workers with degrees and certificates increased significantly to 28%, an increase of 1.4%, showing that the quality of labor resources is being invested in and improved, raising the qualifications of human resources, ready to meet the needs of modern industries.

In addition, the rate of informal employment (including workers in the agricultural, forestry and fishery sector) increased by 65% in the first 6 months of the year, especially in rural areas (74.5%).

The rate also increased for men to 68.2% and for women to 61.5%. This increase may reflect flexibility and responsiveness to the needs of an evolving labor market.

However, the increasing rate of informal employment also poses challenges in protecting workers' rights and ensuring their safety.

Although the number of self-employed workers has slightly decreased, it still remains, especially in rural areas and among female workers (63.8%), showing the need for economic support and development measures to help this group increase their income and improve their quality of life.
