Thailand's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on June 26 destroyed $600 million worth of drugs, including tons of amphetamine, heroin and cocaine.

The FDA said the drugs destroyed included 27 tons of amphetamine, 5 tons of cathinone, 275 kg of heroin, 43 kg of cocaine and 6 kg of opium seized in 192 cases. The Thai Ministry of Public Health stressed that the authorities had tested the drugs before destroying them.
The FDA said the drugs were incinerated in accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency guidelines to ensure no toxic substances or byproducts were released into the environment. The agency live-streamed the destruction on Facebook to ensure transparency and accountability in the storage and destruction of the seized drugs.
Thailand is a major transit hub for drug trafficking along the Mekong River basin. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the illicit drug and wildlife trade in the region was worth an estimated $130 billion in 2019.

According to Myanmar police, the destruction of drugs and precursor chemicals took place at locations in three major cities across the country, including Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi. Specifically, Myanmar authorities destroyed 36 types of drugs worth more than $207.83 million in Yangon, 34 types of drugs worth more than $69.05 million in Mandalya and 75 types of drugs worth more than $169.17 million in Taunggyi. In 2022, Myanmar authorities also destroyed $642 million worth of drugs and precursor chemicals at three different locations across the country.
To address the issues of opium cultivation, drug production and consumption, the Myanmar Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control has established task force groups for specific tasks and implemented the National Drug Control Strategy.
