Those arrested are suspected of belonging to “one of the major criminal organizations involved in the import of synthetic drugs into Spain, operating in different parts of Europe”.
On September 11, Spanish police announced that they had arrested nine people and seized more than 1 million ecstasy pills and 73 kg of synthetic drugs worth more than 25 million euros (more than 27 million USD) in raids in the city of Malaga and the Mediterranean island of Ibiza.
This is the largest seizure of synthetic drugs ever in this Southern European country.
According to police, those arrested are suspected of belonging to “one of the major criminal organizations involved in the import of synthetic drugs into Spain, operating in different parts of Europe.”
The gang, led by several Italian nationals, was based in Ibiza - famous for its beaches and lavish nightclubs and where drugs such as ecstasy are commonly found.
Police suspect the gang used vehicles with false bottoms to transport drugs into Spain.
Spain is considered a major entry point for drugs into Europe due to its close ties with former colonies in Latin America - a major cocaine-producing region - and its geographical proximity to Morocco - the world's leading cannabis producer.
