In a small apartment on the 6th floor in District 5 (Ho Chi Minh City), Mr. Vu Phung Nghinh (80 years old) and Ms. Le Thi Ai Yen (70 years old) sang together. Both were practicing for an upcoming performance.

In the apartment building, Mr. Nghinh and Mrs. Yen are famous for their beautiful singing voices and often participate in performances at senior clubs. They are also known for their special love and happy marriage in their old age.

Before coming to Ms. Yen in 2020, Mr. Nghinh had been a widower for 10 years. Meanwhile, Ms. Yen had gone through a broken marriage.

In their old age, they are not burdened with children or finances but suffer from loneliness. To find companionship, they joined social networks. One day, while browsing the matchmaking section on the network, Mrs. Yen accidentally saw Mr. Nghinh's account.

She was deeply impressed by the photo of Mr. Nghinh holding a microphone and singing. She read his personal information and immediately sent him a friend message.

A day later, Mr. Nghinh replied. He was also impressed with the profile picture of Ms. Yen playing table tennis. He asked for her home address and phone number.

Ms. Yen said: “I have two passions: singing and playing table tennis. When I decided to find a long-term friend, I set the criteria that the person must have the same passion.

Seeing the photo of Mr. Nghinh holding a microphone and singing, I was very impressed. Meanwhile, he wanted to find someone who shared his passion for playing table tennis. Seeing my profile picture holding a table tennis racket, he was very impressed.

At first, we just wanted to find someone who shared one of two passions: singing or playing table tennis. Surprisingly, he and I shared both passions. Seeing that we were destined to meet, I decided to meet and get to know each other.

On the appointed day, seeing that she was younger, Ms. Yen took the initiative to take a taxi to Mr. Nghinh's house. When they met, she was a bit disappointed because he looked older and uglier than in the photo.

However, after receiving a warm, polite handshake from him, she realized that he was sincere, affectionate, and healthy, so she changed her mind. On their first date, they went to play table tennis.

While playing doubles, Mr. Nghinh realized that the two were in sync. He happily shared with his friends that he had “won the jackpot”, meaning that he was lucky enough to find the woman to spend the rest of his life with.

Happiness in old age

After playing table tennis, Ms. Yen and her friends went to Mr. Nghinh's house to play and sing. Later that day, it suddenly started to rain heavily and the water was flooded. Ms. Yen couldn't catch a bus and couldn't bear to let Mr. Nghinh take her home in the rain and wade through the water.

She decided to stay at his house. They spent the night talking and confiding in each other and discovered that they were both teachers, teaching math.

Realizing that the meeting between her and Mr. Nghinh was destined, Ms. Yen proactively proposed to him to get married.

She said: “I told him frankly: One is that we will come together and become husband and wife. Two is that we will be friends and only see each other as siblings. I said: "If we come together, we must definitely register our marriage. Because I will not only be your wife but also the mother of your children, the daughter-in-law of your family."

After listening to me, he agreed. The next day, we went to the ward to get a certificate of celibacy. Two weeks later, we got a marriage certificate.”

When they met and decided to marry a second time at the age of 80, Mr. Nghinh gently announced it and received the agreement and support of his children. Meanwhile, Mrs. Yen hid from her children that she loved Mr. Nghinh and intended to remarry.

After signing the marriage certificate with Mr. Nghinh, she told her children the news. The news surprised her children and they objected. They were worried that she was too old and would have a hard time as a daughter-in-law, "having to serve a man 10 years older than her."

But after she explained and met Mr. Nghinh, Ms. Yen's children changed their minds. They realized that she had found her other half, so they understood and supported their relationship.

With the support of his children, Mr. Nghinh moved in with Ms. Yen. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the couple could not hold a wedding. They plan to hold a wedding ceremony next year to celebrate 5 years of meeting and falling in love.

For nearly 4 years, they have lived happily as a newlywed couple and have never left each other’s side. Wherever they go, they are always together. They even wear matching shirts, hats, and shoes…

They played table tennis together and performed in art and sports clubs of veterans' associations, labor unions, etc. in Go Vap district, district 12 and district 7.

Love and marital happiness in old age help grandparents live happily and healthily. In particular, they feel younger, healthier, and more optimistic than in the years they lived alone.

“Our story has been supported by friends and relatives. Some people even said they admired us. Because through our story, they have faith in love and are motivated to find their other half. That makes me very happy,” Mr. Nghinh added.
