The previous figure was 32 people killed and about 100 others rescued.
The fishing boat carrying migrants capsized in international waters in the Ionian Sea off the coast of the Greek province of Peloponnese. Greek authorities have launched a large-scale search and rescue operation off the town of Pylos, involving several naval vessels, helicopters, military aircraft and six other vessels. Rescue efforts have been hampered by strong winds.
The coast guard added that a surveillance plane from the European agency Frontex spotted the boat on the afternoon of June 13, but the migrants refused any assistance. The force said no one on board was wearing life jackets at the time of the accident and authorities have not released the nationalities of the migrants. The migrants are believed to have left Libya and were headed to Italy.
Along with Spain and Italy, Greece is one of the main gateways into the European Union for tens of thousands of migrants and refugees from the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The majority of asylum seekers arrive in Greece from neighboring Turkey.
