Number of dengue fever cases in Hanoi increased to a record, one more death

The deceased patient was a 20-year-old woman. Before being admitted to the hospital, she had a high fever and asked someone to come and give her an IV at home.

This is the third dengue-related death that Hanoi has recorded in 2023. The patient is from Quoc Oai district. She showed symptoms of the disease on August 28, according to information from the Hanoi Center for Disease Control (CDC) on the afternoon of September 11.

Three days after the onset of symptoms, the family invited a private health worker to the patient’s home to administer IV fluids. After that, the patient’s fever subsided but she was still tired. Test results showed that the girl was positive for Dengue NS1.

At 5:00 a.m. on September 3, she had symptoms of chest tightness, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Her family took her to Quoc Oai District General Hospital for examination and treatment. At 10:00 p.m. the same day, seeing that the patient's condition did not improve, the hospital transferred the girl to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

Here, the patient received intensive treatment, intubation, mechanical ventilation, blood filtration, and vasopressor maintenance, but his condition did not improve. The patient died on September 4.

Two deaths related to dengue fever in Hanoi Previously recorded were a 19-year-old man in Ha Dong district and a 45-year-old woman in Hoan Kiem district.

According to the Hanoi CDC, last week (from September 1 to 8), the city recorded nearly 1,700 cases of dengue fever in 30 districts, towns and cities (an increase of 540 cases compared to the previous week). This is the third week that the number of cases has exceeded 1,000 cases/week. The number of cases has been increasing continuously, this is the week with the highest number of cases this year.

The districts with the most patients this week are: Hoang Mai (137 cases), Dong Da (119 cases), Thanh Tri (115 cases), Ha Dong (109 cases), Nam Tu Liem (104 cases), Cau Giay (94 cases), Chuong My (81 cases), Phu Xuyen (79 cases), Thanh Xuan (75 cases), Phuc Tho (72 cases).

Since the beginning of 2023, the city has recorded nearly 8,400 cases of dengue fever, with 3 deaths. Hanoi is one of the provinces with the highest number of cases in the North.
